  • We put the Edge to bed in an iOpener nest—hopefully it awakes refreshed, with adhesive released.

  • Lifting the glass and...wait—is that normal?

  • Looks like prying into the curved display means we separated the display just a little bit. Whoops.

  • According to Samsung, the curved glass is created by a process called 3D thermoforming, a process of heating and molding the glass. While it looks slick, it comes at a cost—in this case eight times the cost. That's right, what was once a $3 part could now cost Samsung as much as $26 due to low yields.

  • A recent report claims that Samsung's curved-glass supplier is only getting 50% yield, and that's pretty awful for the environment. Manufacturing is already rough enough on the planet, and this means they've got to make two screens for every phone.

Es scheint so, als ob wir durch das Hebeln im gebogenen Teil des Glases das Display ein bisschen abgetrennt haben. Ups.

Samsung zufolge wird das gebogene Glas durch einen Prozess, der sich 3D Thermoformung nennt, hergestellt, ein Verfahren bei dem das Glas erhitzt und geformt wird. Es sieht super aus, aber es hat seinen Preis, in diesem Fall den achtfachen. Ja genau, ein Teil, das einmal 2,50€ gekostet hat, kostet Samsung jetzt aufgrund der geringen Produktionsmenge über 20€.

Einem kürzlich erschienenen Bericht zufolge hat Samsungs Lieferant für gebogenes Glas nur einen Produktionserfolg von 50%, das ist eine furchtbare Umweltbilanz. Die Fertigung als solche ist schon hart für unseren Planeten, aber das hier heißt, dass sie für jedes Smartphone zwei Bildschirme produzieren müssen.
